Read everything you need to know below!

What Are Poppers?

Poppers is the frequent slang term used for a variety of chemical psychoactive drugs called alkyl nitrites, and primarily, the inhalant drug amyl nitrite.

The most familiar type of poppers inhalant is amyl nitrite. It is commonly mistaken for amyl nitrate, which is actually, another chemical with a similar name, often misspelled as amil nitrate. Poppers frequently referred to as liquid gold, butyl nitrite, heart medicine, and room deodoriser.

The word poppers started to be used as a term for these drugs during the 1960s, when amyl nitrite, (which during this time was used as a heart medicine), was bought in the form of capsules that were "popped," to release the chemical. Keep in mind that you should never treat real or believed heart conditions with poppers, unless prescribed by a doctor. You should also never leave an open bottle of poppers in a room as a way to deodorise it. This is not an effective method and can be harmful.

The History Of Poppers

During the 1960s the FDA made amyl nitrite (Poppers) available to be bought without a prescription as an over-the-counter substance for the purpose of treating heart conditions or low blood pressure. It was during this time that the drug became extremely popular for recreational usage. The public could now go out and see what the benefits and hype was surrounding Poppers. This motivated large amounts of the public to start using the drug on frequent basis as well as starting the recreational market for the drug across the country. Due to this in 1961, the FDA restricted the laws on the drug more heavily, though the public already had the desire for the drug and its effects. Drug companies started the process of looking for ways to legally sell the drug. In 1969 a new formulation of the drug was designed and was made from isobutyl nitrate and was sold to the public.

Popper Use

Poppers are rarely used these days for heart problems, although amyl nitrite has continued to be used as a way of treating cyanide poisoning. Poppers are commonly used as recreational drugs used mainly at clubs and parties to get a rush feeling. They are generally administered by inhaling the fumes directly from their tiny bottles. Poppers are relatively cheap to buy and easy to get your hands on, in sex shops they are sold as room deodorisers or sex enhancers.

Poppers are often used in addition with other common designer drugs such as acid (LSD) or ecstasy. Poppers cause intense effects that can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. This style of usage is generally not associated with sex but instead the need for an instantaneous “rush” or feeling of extreme relaxation, dizziness, euphoria, mood elevation and intoxication.

Popper Effects

Poppers had instantaneous effects that produces almost an immediate high or “rush” of warm sensations and notions of dizziness, which is similar to the feeling of extreme alcohol intoxication. Once inhaled, the effects of the drug come on rapidly, but unlike other drugs like alcohol, they last briefly ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes. Although some users find the effects of poppers satisfying, some users find it slightly disorienting.

Poppers are actually vasodilators, which means they dilate the blood vessels. As a result of this, the blood pressure drops quickly, leading to lightheadedness, which can sometimes result in brief unconsciousness and muscle strength, known as syncope. However, within the same timeframe the heart speeds up, even if the user is relaxed, which is called tachycardia.

Another effect of Poppers is the relaxation of the anal sphincter. Due to this, the drug is commonly used to facilitate anal sex. Some users also find that taking Poppers while having sex can increase sexual sensations and intensify orgasm.

Popper Side Effects

Poppers are generally irritating which can cause sinusitis. They can sometimes trigger allergic reactions that are followed by wheezing or breathing difficulties. Poppers can be scented, therefore allergic reactions can be triggered by inhaling the perfumes inside.

As a result of the dilation of blood vessels in the brain, you can get the side effects of headaches which range from mild to sever. Poppers are can also heighten the fluid pressure in the eyes, known as intraocular pressure. This could be harmful to those who are at risk of glaucoma.
